Common Milkwort (Polygala vulgaris) (29/06/2022) Fulking Hill, Fulking, W Sussex. Chalk Milkwort has much bluer flowers (Common Milkwort can have blue, shades of blue/purple, or white flowers). Here showing the outer two petals and the central petal which has a top part and the lower part is the finger-like projections. At the top flower buds.
Common Milkwort (Polygala vulgaris) (29/06/2022) Fulking Hill, Fulking, W Sussex. Another main id feature of Common Milkwort is that the leaves are alternate all down the stem (sadly I've lost the photos of the leaves). Another feature is that when the flowers are young, they are green and gradually turn blue/purple as they get closer to flowering.
Common Milkwort (Polygala vulgaris) (29/06/2022) Fulking Hill, Fulking, W Sussex. Young flowers. A main ID feature is these "anastamosing" veins - which means the way in which the veins multiply and coalesce near the edges of the developing petals.
Common Milkwort (Polygala vulgaris) (29/06/2022) Fulking Hill, Fulking, W Sussex. A very shitty image (these flowers are very small) - but you can just see what I think are thred-like stamens - in next image these are not present - I think male and female flowers may be separate.
Common Milkwort (Polygala vulgaris) (29/06/2022) Fulking Hill, Fulking, W Sussex. Another shitty image, but further to the last image, I htink this is a female flower - the purple "thing" is the stigma.
